Wiltshire Closed Championships—Saturday 18th April 2009

The League has reason to celebrate as one of its own is a worthy County Champion.

Thomas Rendall, who represents Chalke Valley I, can now be called County Champion and thoroughly deserves the accolade. Thomas, who was seeded No 3 for the competition got better as the day progressed and convincingly beat No. 1 seed Chris Pickard 3-0 in the final.

It was a good day for Thomas, who although knocked out in the first round proper of the Men’s singles, was a finalist in the Men’s Consolation singles and narrowly lost out to David Williams 3-2; who had beat our own Paul Taylor quite comfortably 3-0 in the Semi-Final.

Other league representation included Kane Taylor (Chalke Valley II) who was a Semi-Finalist in the Junior singles and had impressive 3-1 victories over both No 4 seed Ethan Gunton, and Alex Machlachlan in the process; eventually losing 3-1 to Chris Pickard in the Semi-Final.

Kane had a good Men's Open competition and reached the Quarter-Finals, succumbing 3-0 to University of Manchester player, Andrew Hodges.

Thomas and Kane also entered the Junior Doubles and after clawing back a 2-0 deficit in their Semi-Final match, eventually lost it 3-2.

Paul Taylor (Chalke Valley II) also represented the league and made quite an impression in the Men's singles; although none of this was due to his Table Tennis prowess.
